A query by Robert L. Quinnett with a reply from Philippe Grangé, pgrange@sophocle.imaginet.fr, printed in Newsgroups: soc.genealogy.french on 5 May 1999, subj: Grangje=Grange?

Bob.

Reply to Robert L. Quinnett from Philippe Grangé: Bonjour. (Para.) Meilleurs sentiments,...

Reply to Philippe Grangé by Robert L. Quinnett: Je ne sais pas, mais peut-être Marie habitée à Paris. Nous pensons que un fils de Marie, Joseph-Pierre Quinet, est né là le 26 août 1830. (Para.) Merci beaucoup pour les informations. Bob

I have discovered that de Granje is a name in the Netherlands which means that it is probably in Belgian Flanders also. Since many Quinet/Quinette live in Belgium, it is possible that Jean-Pierre and Marie came from Belgique. However, none of their descendants ever stated that. On the contrary they claimed (or seemed to claim as far as Archie Eli Quinnett was concerned) a French origin. Also, the Ozaukee County WI census shows France as place of origin. However, when they married in 1803, Belgium was part of France!: Robert L. Quinnett 5 Dec 1999.

Nicholas did not come to the United States with the rest of the family. He came at a later time after his service in the army.": Robert Leishman papers in possession of Robert L. Quinnett.

Nicolas was apparently conscripted into the army at age 20 (1833) for seven years under the "Law of 1832 of Marshal Soult." Consequently, the earliest he could have rejoined his family in the United States would have been 1840 at age 27. : Jacques Charbonnier, email 23 July 2004, Subject: Re: La famille QUINET-GRANGIER ... Commentaires ! [He must have joined the family in New York, since the family probably moved to Wisconsin Territory between 1842 and 1844 -- see notes for Pierre, father of Nicolas, on the rationale for when the family moved to Wisconsin Territory. Apparently, he met Mathilde in New York either before or at the marriage of his sister Pauline to Moses Renaud, but he married her, apparently, in Wisconsin -- RLQ]

Archique Quinette and another brother pulled him out and he lived four days.": [This information seems to have been furnished to Leishman by Jennie Philpott, daughter of Emily Frances Quinet, since the same information is in her letter to Archie Eli Quinnett of 29 July 1948, letter in the possession of Robert L. Notes:

Francois-Xavier was found as the first child of Pierre and Marie in the LDS records by Jacques Charbonnier, but was never listed by anyone else, and there is no further sign of him. On the other hand, William (Guillaume) was listed by Robert Leishman as a child of Pierre and Marie, and Jennie Monahan in her letter to my father on 29 July 1948 commented a couple of times about "William" coming to America in 1832 with her mother, Emily Frances. Jacques Charbonnier found nothing about him in the LDS records. There is no other sign or mention of him. Could Francois-Xavier and Guillaume be the same person? It would be nothing new in French and French-Canadian genealogy for a person to undergo a name change in the course of his or her life. In fact, my own mother was baptized as Bernadette Joanna (Latin entry) but was known throughout her life as Jeannette Bernadette. In any event, we still know nothing more about William or Francois-Xavier in America.: Robert L. Quinnett

    Notes:

In the United States she was known as Emily Frances. She and Bevier/Bivert moved from NY to Brown County, WI [??]: Robert Leishman papers in possession of Robert L. Quinnett. [Sr. Dolores Wagner lists place of marriage as Washington County, WI, in her Family Group Record of Jean Pierre Quinet and Marie Granje, dated 11 Oct 95.]

"She (Aunt Jennie) went on to explain that her mother [Emily Frances] had been converted from the Catholic Church when a young woman. So consequently her first husband may not have been Catholic either. Although Aunt Jennie said she had her children all christened in the Catholic Church because her relatives had feared that the children would be lost if she didn't do so. But not one of her children ever adherred [sic] to the Catholic faith. They are all Protestants. Becoming Protestants through conversion when they were still young people. She said she herself had become converted through reading the New Testament of her Bible after asking God to show her the way. [Is this the French New Testament belonging to Jennie that Gertrude was so diligently looking for in the 1940s and which I have?--Robert L. Quinnett] You will read all this when you read her letter and probably understand it all much better by so doing. She also tells that her mother was divorced from her father who was great-grandmother's third husband.": Letter from Gertrude Hagler (concerning Jennie Philpott) to AEQ, 16 May 1940, in the possession of Robert L. Quinnett.

In WI, according to a granddaughter, "two men came and talked to him [Bevier] in his language and he deserted Grandma. Now I am not sure if aunt Frances had been born or if Grandma was just expecting her so maybe when Grandma married Mr. Diacon, he adopted her.": Letter in possession of Robert L. Quinnett.

After the death of Diacon in 1865, she moved with her family to Kossuth County, Iowa where she married and divorced Joseph Monahan in 1870. She had a homestead 12 miles from Algona, Iowa, which she later traded for land in Kansas: Robert Leishman papers in possession of Robert L. Quinnett.
