Mary Jane Zalewski (nee Corrigan), formerly of Cedarburg, was reunited with her beloved husband Richard on Wednesday, August 10, 2011. For the past 7 years she had been a resident at Clement Manor in Greenfield. She was 85 years old. Mary Jane, the daughter of Maurice and Agnes Braatz Corrigan, was born in Ashland, WI, on April 27, 1926, and grew up in Iron Mountain/Kingsford, Michigan. She moved to Milwaukee after High School where she was employed at the Weyenburg Shoe Company. On October 11, 1947 she married Richard Zalewski and the couple moved to Cedarburg in 1955. During their 51 years of marriage, Mary Jane and Richard raised 3 children - Mark (Evonne) Zalewski of Greendale, John (Sharon) Zalewski of Saukville, and Barbara (James) Johnson of Bayside. She is further survived by seven grandchildren; Wendy (Greg) Serafin, Michael (Stephanie Yakobina) Zalewski, Eric (Jaime) Zalewski, Brian (Darcy) Zalewski and Joel (Ali) Zalewski, Lauren and Rebecca Johnson. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren; Zach and Connor Serafin and Aaron, Adam and Aerissa Zalewski, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Mary Jane loved to celebrate her Irish Heritage and was very close to her twin brother Tom, younger brother George, and sisters, Shirley and Patricia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard. A devoted wife and mother, Mary Jane also worked part-time at the Cedarburg Red Owl, Montgomery Ward, and Coffee Pot Restaurant - where she brightened the days of everyone she met. Mary Jane was a member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church for many years, belonging to the Women's Guild and the St. Ann's Society. She also enjoyed doing crafts, especially crocheting, quilting, knitting, and other needle work.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 17th at 12 PM at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church North, 1375 Covered Bridge Road in Cedarburg with Father Dan Janasik officiating. Mary Jane will be laid to rest next to her husband Richard in St. Francis Borgia Parish Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 17th at the CHURCH from 10 AM until 12 PM.

Notes:

Joseph F Zalewski served in the US Army Infantry during America's involvement in World War I (1917-1918). He fought with the Allied Expeditionary Forces in France during several major battles (according to his sister, Mary (Zalewski) Giersch). Unfortunately, his military records were destroyed in a fire in 1973 at the National Personnel Records Center - St Louis, Missouri (according to a reply to a 1994 inquiry submitted by Michael Rynka - the grandson of Mary (Zalewski) Giersch). After the war, Joseph returned to Milwaukee where he served with distinction on that city's municipal police force until his retirement.

He was a Milwaukee City Police Officer for 33 years.

Frank Zalewski, Sr., his wife Anna, and their two oldest children - Martha and Angeline, emigrated to the US from the Baltic port of Danzig and arrived in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1890. The couple's third child, Mary, was born in Baltimore in March 1891. The family then traveled west to Nebraska and east, from there, to the Polish community in Chicago. By May, 1892, the family had settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

(Research):According to an interview conducted in April 1980 with Frank Gierszewski, Jr, a grandson of Frank and Anna Zalewski. He indicated his grandparents left Poland from the Baltic port of Danzig and entered the United States through the port of Baltimore, Maryland. There is some confusion, however, as to the area of Poland in which Frank and Anna Zalewski resided prior to their emigration to the United States in 1890. During a telephone interview with their granddaughter, Caroline (Walczak) Sullivan, conducted in January 1995, she indicated that Frank and Anna lived somewhere in the province of Poznan -- an area of Poland then under German jurisdiction and known as South Prussia. his would correspond with information supplied on the death certificate and in the newspaper obituary of Frank Zalewski, Sr in 1941. Although neither source mentions Poznan as his place of birth, both list Germany as his country of origin. (Much of western Poland, including Poznan Province, became German territory after the three partitions of Poland at the end of the eighteenth century.)

There is, however, a conflicting story as to the area of Poland from which Frank and Anna originated. During a 1993 telephone interview with another granddaughter, Irene (Zalewski) Lutzenberger, she indicated that her late father had always said his parents came from eastern Poland -- an area then under Russian rule. Irene's father also stated that when his parents entered the United States, their surname was spelled "Salefsky," thereby reflecting the Russian influence. Although no official documents can be found to verify this, it is interesting to note that in the 1934 obituary of another grandchild, Norbert Cybela, the maiden name of Norbert's mother is spelled "Zalesky."

It is hypothetically possible that Frank Zalewski, Sr is, indeed, born and raised in Russian Poland and, at some later point in his life, moved to the German section in which Poznan Province was located. Although traveling across political borders was difficult in 19th-century Europe, to say the least, it was not impossible. In Russian Poland, for example, all debts to the government, including military service in the czar's army, had to be fulfilled before travel documents would be issued and borders would be crossed. Two years of active military service followed by two years in the reserve forces was required of all males when they reached their twentieth birthday. In Frank's case, that would have accounted for the years 1878 through 1882. We know he married Anna Lindner (a German) in January 1885, which means he probably relocated from Russian-held, eastern Poland to the German-held, western area sometime between 1882 and 1884. This, of course, is only speculation but would explain the Russian "sky" ending on the surname.

Frank Zalewski, 82, of 2630 N Buffum St., was found dead on the floor of his home late Friday afternoon by his son, Joseph, a police officer, who came to visit him. He had been living alone since his wife died two years ago. Death was due to natural causes, according to coroner's assistants.

Mr. Zalewski was born in Germany and came to this country 51 years ago. He worked for the department of public works for 39 years, retiring six years ago. He and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1935. Funeral services will be held at 8:30 am Monday at the Schramka chapel, 612 E Burleigh st, and at 9 am at St. Casimir's church, with burial in Holy Cross cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph and Frank, jr., and five daughters, Mrs. Angeline Pierzchalski, Mrs. Mary Gierszewski, Mrs. Frances Cybela, Mrs. Helen Stroinski and Mrs. Agnes Walczak.

TRAFFIC FATAL TO SEVEN ON THE FIRST DAY OF YEAR



Three Are in County; Weekend Toll Is 13 as 1961 Ends With 898 Fatalities



The New Year got off to a bloody beginning on Wisconsin's streets and highways as seven persons were injured fatally in traffic accidents before the first day of the year was over.

Three of the Monday fatalities occurred in Milwaukee county.

In addition, six other persons were injured fatally in earlier accidents over the holiday weekend and one died over weekend as a result of a Dec. 22 accident. The seven deaths brought the 1961 unofficial traffic toll to 898. In 1960 the total was 930 deaths. Last New Year's weekend resulted in 24 traffic deaths.

The Monday fatalities included a 90 year old man on his way to church, a 10 year old boy riding with his invalid grandmother, and a father of four small children on his way home from doing the family wash.



DRIVERS ARE HELD



Drivers involved in the Monday accidents included two men held on suspicion of drunken driving, a 15 year old who reportedly was driving 100 miles an hour and had been drinking, and a 24 year old man accused of leaving the scene of an accident,

Troka was killed at 6:55 AM Monday at the intersection of N. Bremen and E. Clarke sts. while he was on his way to church. He was pronounced dead at the county emergency hospital of multiple injuries.

Police identified the driver of the automobile as Frank Merz, 27, of 1516 S. 6th St. A coroner's inquest was ordered.



RAN TAVERN FOR 35 YEARS



Troka operated a tavern for 35 years at 900 E. Meinecke Dav. He retired from the tavern business in 1930, but since then had been active, until two years ago, as treasurer of the Pulaski Savings & Loan association.

Surviving him are two sons, Roman and Leo, a daughter, Sister Mary Claren tine, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Myslinski, all of Milwaukee.

Funeral services will be held 8:30 AM, Thursday at the Leszczynski funeral home, 726 E. Center St., and at 9 AM at St. Casimir's Catholic church, N. Bremen and E. Clarke sts. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Bremen St., passed away Sun., July 19, beloved wife of Joseph, fond mother of Roman, Leo, and Sister Mary Clarentine S.S.N.D., mother-in-law of Pauline Troka, sister of Minnie Kolasinski; also survived by 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Funeral Wed., 8:30 AM from the Leszczynski Funeral Home, 726 E. Center St., to St. Casimir's church at 9 AM. Interment Holy Cross cemetery. In state Tues after 3 PM St. Casimir's parish and Rosary society will hold vigil Tues. at 7:30 PM.

According to a story about how Thomas died, while he was having a stroke the town doctor was riding by on his horse to deliver a baby. One of Thomas' children ran out a started waving their arms at the doctor to get his attention. Unfortunately, he just waved back and kept on going thinking that the child was just saying hello.

Brief Illness Fatal This Morning To Woman

Mrs. Frank Braatz, Sr., 81, of Rt. 1, Ashland, for 40 years a resident of Ashland county, died in a local hosptial this morning, following a brief illness.



The former Margaret Stearns, was born in Germany, August 30, 1866 and in 1881 emigrated to the United States. Her marriage to Frank Braatz was solemnized in 1891 at Bear Creek, Wis. The couple celebrated their golden anniversary last year.



Survivors are her husband, Frank Braatz, Sr., one son, Frank Braatz, Jr., Ashland; four daughters, Mrs. Claude Moll (Matie), Mrs. Louis Peterson (Margaret) and Mrs. Alice Lancaster, all of Ashland, and Mrs. Maurice Corrigan (Agnes), Iron Mountain, Mich.; two brothers, Fred Stearns of Oregon and Ernest Stearns of Minneapolis; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.



Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. from the Pascoe-Erickson Funeral Home.
