    Mary Jane Zalewski (nee Corrigan), formerly of Cedarburg, was reunited with her beloved husband Richard on Wednesday, August 10, 2011. For the past 7 years she had been a resident at Clement Manor in Greenfield. She was 85 years old. Mary Jane, the daughter of Maurice and Agnes Braatz Corrigan, was born in Ashland, WI, on April 27, 1926, and grew up in Iron Mountain/Kingsford, Michigan. She moved to Milwaukee after High School where she was employed at the Weyenburg Shoe Company. On October 11, 1947 she married Richard Zalewski and the couple moved to Cedarburg in 1955. During their 51 years of marriage, Mary Jane and Richard raised 3 children - Mark (Evonne) Zalewski of Greendale, John (Sharon) Zalewski of Saukville, and Barbara (James) Johnson of Bayside. She is further survived by seven grandchildren; Wendy (Greg) Serafin, Michael (Stephanie Yakobina) Zalewski, Eric (Jaime) Zalewski, Brian (Darcy) Zalewski and Joel (Ali) Zalewski, Lauren and Rebecca Johnson. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren; Zach and Connor Serafin and Aaron, Adam and Aerissa Zalewski, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Mary Jane loved to celebrate her Irish Heritage and was very close to her twin brother Tom, younger brother George, and sisters, Shirley and Patricia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard. A devoted wife and mother, Mary Jane also worked part-time at the Cedarburg Red Owl, Montgomery Ward, and Coffee Pot Restaurant - where she brightened the days of everyone she met. Mary Jane was a member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church for many years, belonging to the Women's Guild and the St. Ann's Society. She also enjoyed doing crafts, especially crocheting, quilting, knitting, and other needle work.
    A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 17th at 12 PM at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church North, 1375 Covered Bridge Road in Cedarburg with Father Dan Janasik officiating. Mary Jane will be laid to rest next to her husband Richard in St. Francis Borgia Parish Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 17th at the CHURCH from 10 AM until 12 PM.

    According to a story about how Thomas died, while he was having a stroke the town doctor was riding by on his horse to deliver a baby. One of Thomas' children ran out a started waving their arms at the doctor to get his attention. Unfortunately, he just waved back and kept on going thinking that the child was just saying hello.

    Brief Illness Fatal This Morning To Woman

    Mrs. Frank Braatz, Sr., 81, of Rt. 1, Ashland, for 40 years a resident of Ashland county, died in a local hosptial this morning, following a brief illness.



    The former Margaret Stearns, was born in Germany, August 30, 1866 and in 1881 emigrated to the United States. Her marriage to Frank Braatz was solemnized in 1891 at Bear Creek, Wis. The couple celebrated their golden anniversary last year.



    Survivors are her husband, Frank Braatz, Sr., one son, Frank Braatz, Jr., Ashland; four daughters, Mrs. Claude Moll (Matie), Mrs. Louis Peterson (Margaret) and Mrs. Alice Lancaster, all of Ashland, and Mrs. Maurice Corrigan (Agnes), Iron Mountain, Mich.; two brothers, Fred Stearns of Oregon and Ernest Stearns of Minneapolis; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.



    Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. from the Pascoe-Erickson Funeral Home.

Firmenich, 91, pioneer resident of Ashland and a charter member of the Chequamegon Bay Old Settler's club. who died Saturday were to be held Tuesday morning at the A.F. Anderson residence, 900 Ninth avenue west at 9 o'clock and at the St. Agnes church at 9:30. Burial was to be made in St. Agnes cemetery.
    Born in Cologne, Germany, February 11, 1840, Mr. Firmenich came to Milwaukee in May 1847 and settled with his parents on a farm located in the wilderness 25 miles from that city.
    Coming in contact with Indians who the inhabited the region, he learned to weave baskets from ash wood, a hobby which he enjoyed until the time of his death. His marriage to Miss Pauline Thompson took place at Green Bay, February 11, 1867. Mrs. Firmenich preceded him in death by 21 years.

    Lived With Daughter

    Mr. Firmenich first worked in Ashland as a millwright for the Miller and Ritchie company. He was employed there for four years. and later became connected with D.W. Mowatt firm where he was employed until 1905. He also lived on a farm near Sanborn until 1916. For the past few years he has been making his home with his daughter.     Surviving are: Five daughters, Mrs. Emma Martin, Milwaukee; Mrs. William McKinley, Seattle; Mrs. Tom Gorman, Iron Mountain, Mich.; Mrs. Joseph Fabro and Mrs. A.F. Anderson, Ashland. Two sons, Henry of Elma, Manitoba, and Albert of International Falls; fifty-two grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
    Six of his grandchildren saw service in France during the World war.

    On Saturday, May 9, Mrs. Margaret Stearns, many years a resident of this village, died at the home of her son at Phillips, after several years of ill health. Her death was due to cancer.



    Mrs. Stearns was born September 14, 1838, at Wurtemberg, Germany, coming to this country in 1881. She was a sister of the late William Schumacher and of Mrs. Peter Wagner. A brother, Fred Schumacher, lives at Worthingtan, Indiana, and a brother John at Kansas City, Kansas, and one sister still lives in Germany.



    The remains were brought nere Sunday and laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery. They were accompanied by Ernest Stearns and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stearns of Phillips, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Braatz of Mellen, the sons and daughter of the deceased.



    There were also in attendance Miss Matie Smith of Mellen; and Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Rice and Mrs. E. J. Harkness, all of McMinnville, Tennessee.
